Thursday Thrills

Grier did a WONDERFUL job as our child of the day and read Meanwhile Back at the Ranch. Thanks, Grier...we really enjoyed it!

On a sad note, our own Natalie was hurt yesterday by a neighborhood dog. She is at home recuperating and we are anxious to have her back at school. Take care, Natalie, read a GREAT book, and know we miss you!!!!

We had an opportunity to visit Mrs. Sieglar's 1st grade class and enjoy a readers' theater performance of several plays. You could tell they had worked hard!

Tomorrow we have art.

Tuesday Tales

Sahithi did a GREAT job as child of the day. She read The Night Before 1st Grade. Thanks, Sahithi!!

We had a visit from the Bartlett Library today and we heard about the Summer Reading Program: Wild About Books! Sounds like a GREAT opportunity for everyone. Students need to keep reading even though we are out of school to maintain their current reading levels. Visit the library 1-2 times a week and READ!!!!

Math Workshop: 1st graders worked on fractions; 2nd graders completed unit 10.
Readers' Workshop: we learned more about synthesis as we read The Other Side.
Writers' Workshop: We are working on organization. We read the book That's Good, That's Bad.

Happy Reading!!!!

End of the Week!

Yesterday, Thursday, Chris was our child of the day. GREAT job, Chris! It was also Miss Bridget's last day with us. She graduates from South Elgin High School Saturday and then starts college at ECC on Tuesday! No break at all!

Miss Bridget was a tremendous asset to our classroom this year. She read with students, she helped them with their math, she did word work with them, and even worked with the 2nd graders on cursive writing. Thank you, Miss Bridget, for all you did to make a difference in the students' life! Congratulations and may all your dreams come true!

Kendall read to us today in our shortened school day. She read Little Dinosaur's Skateboard. We didn't have time for calendar today because of our short day.

Of course, the BIG event was FIELD DAY!!!!

I'm having problems loading Francis' reading. I may have to stop this!!!! I'll work on it later and may possibly stop. It's taking hours to load and it should only take a few minutes.

He did a GREAT job reading though! And we Love TACKY books! Thanks Francis!

Of course, the BIG event of the day was the picnic:

Tales of Tuesday

I'm having problems posting Mashal's reading of That's Not My Dog! I'll work on it later this week. She did a GREAT job, though!

Both 1st and 2nd graders worked on math projects to prepare them for tomorrow. First graders learned more about equivalent fractions and then cut out fraction strips to help them visualize equivalencies tomorrow during our lesson. 2nd graders learned more about place value and then made a place value book to the ten-thousands that they will use tomorrow also during their lesson.

In readers' workshop we learned more about the reading comprehension strategy of synthesis. We learned that our ideas begin BIG, then as we read, our thinking changes, we add in our schema, start eliminating and changing our thinking, until we narrow it down to the one main idea.

In writers' workshop we focused on the trait of organization.

Tomorrow is our whole school picnic. Mr. Burger sent out a phone message to all parents. Be sure and listen to it. Bring your blankets, put on sunscreen, and be prepared to READ! If you wish to bring a book from home you may, just write your name in it.

Monday Marvels

Our child of the day, Josh, did a great job reading and leading us through the promise. Listen as he reads:

Kaitlyn's grandmother surprised her as our mystery reader. She read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! What fun!

video

In math workshop, 1st graders worked on equivalent fractions and 2nd graders worked on place value to the ten thousands.

We began working on the reading strategy of synthesis today. I modeled what it looked like doing a think aloud using the book Jin Woo by Eve Bunting. So far, we have learned that synthesis involves changing your thinking as you read, and, weaving your ideas in with the text.

In writers' workshop we worked on organization. Some students are illustrating stories.

Please remember that all library books were due back to school last Friday. If you have not returned them, please do so tomorrow.

Friday Fun!

Enjoy Matthew's Reading!!!

video

With the rain, Field Day has been postponed until next Friday, May 22.

After art and ESL enrichment, math workshop began. 1st graders worked on number sense and 2nd graders learned about counting up to make change.

We learned that in writing a response to a book we can follow this plan: Restate the questions, write a GIST answer, give at least 3 supporting details, then write a concluding statement with feeling. Next week we will learn about synthesizing.

During writers' workshop we learned about endings. Not only does our lead and 1st sentences need to hook the reader, our endings need to linger with our readers as well.

All library books were due today. A few students still have theirs. Please return them school on Monday.
