Tuesday Tales!
Kylie did a fantastic job reading The Hare and the Tortoise. We really enjoyed this traditional tale. And, of course, a GREAT job leading us through the class promise and the calendar. Here we are reciting our daily pledge.
We talked in our morning meeting about striving for excellence. We learned that the things we are good at are a habit and take practice. We talked how we working on our reading, writing, math, etc., everyday, practicing so we can continually improved. We talked about how we practice making the right choices: not by repeating the rules, but by showing we know how to follow the 4C's, everywhere we go. Show...don't tell.
Math Workshop: 1st graders worked on number sense using the hundreds chart. I gave them clues for the target number: <,> the target, odd/even; you say this number when you count by 5's, etc. They gradually narrowed down the clues to the answer. They then worked with a partner and played some more Guess My Number. Try it at home. It will really help them build number sense. 2nd graders worked on making change. We worked on estimation (crucial to number sense!)and then went "shopping!" as we practiced making change.
Readers' Workshop: We read The Three Silly Billy's, and worked on the skill of retelling. This is a surface level understanding of books, but one they have to do in order to help them remember the story. We are moving toward the deep level understanding of synthesis, where we weave our ideas together with the story, and our thinking changes as we read. More on that later!
Writers' Workshop: We learned the strategy of "Ba-Da-Bing!" There are really only three ways to transition or move a story along. Ba: what did my feet do? Da: what did I see? Bing: What was I thinking? When touched our feet when we said Ba; our eyes when we said Da, and our brain when we said Bing, adding a mnemonic to help students remember.
So as they write, when I am asking for them to tell me more, here's what I say: BA-DA-BING...go back and add it in!
We also went to the library!
Tomorrow is Miss Ahrends last day. We will certainly miss her. She has been a TREMENDOUS asset to the classroom.
